Introduction

Any research endeavour involves wading into unknown territory. This work has been no different. I have come up against several roadblocks and maybe, just maybe, you are the one person in the world who can help me find the solution to one of my current dilemmas.

If you have an idea that might help me, please go to the Contact Me page and send me a message using the Feedback Form provided there.

1. David Milks (1807-1866)

David was my 2Xgreat-grandfather and the originator of the Milks/Mylks line that I have been able to trace in my own ancestry. The earliest record I have found about David shows that he was raised from a young age by John Wright and wife Mary McLean-Wright. David appears to be in the 1817 census in the Wright household. The next record I have found of him occurs in 1831 when he bought land in Augusta for 75 pounds (sale document 1  sale document 2). Then, in 1832, he married Amelia White. He died in 1866 and his grave is in Read's Cemetery, Augusta Twp (grave photo).

There is no record of this David Milks and his descendants in Grace Croft's book on the Milks/Milks families that was written in the 1950's.

Leads I have Searched:

1. David Milks (b. 1752) of Rensselaer Cty, N.Y. died in early 1806. Prior to his death he spent time in Elizabethtown and/or Augusta Twp. In late 1806 a request was made to create an inventory of his assets and liabilities  in Elizabethtown. The inventory was conducted by Asahel Wright (father of John Wright mentioned above) and Robert McLean. David had assets of 33 pounds including two horses and two cows and some personal effects, but no land.

2. Jonathan Milks married Catharine McLean in 1805 in Kingston although they listed their residence as Elizabethtown. In 1806, Catharine petitioned for, and received, land as the daughter of John McLean, a Loyalist. I have been unable to find any further record of either Jonathan or his wife, Catharine after 1806.

3. The David Milks who died in 1806 had a son named David Milks (married to Martha Ireland d. 1824) who was born in 1793 in Rensselaer, N.Y. The son David lived in Kitley Twp in the 1820's, married a second time to Anna Wade. moved to Pennsylvania and then to California where he died and is buried.

4. On 4 Sep 1833 there is a single record of a person named Henry Milks witnessing the marriage between Peter Ducolon and Martha Sharp.

All of this is only inferential, but strongly so. I need help finding links among David Milks (b. 1807), Jonathan Milks and David Milks (1752-1806) if any exist.

There were no other Milks in any census for Leeds & Grenville Counties prior to 1832 that I have been able to identify.
