2 CONC yanamid's Canadian Head Office. In 1964 he was again transferred to Cyanamid's Head Office i
2 CONC n Wayne County, N.J. He lived in Wyckoff, N.J. Upon his retirement in 1973, he was Director o
2 CONC f Administrative Services for Cyanamid International in New Jersey. While in this capacity h
2 CONC e travelled the world, often with his wife, Lenore.

2 CONT Madeline Francis' father John Francis was a long-time RR policeman in (Clifton) Niagara Falls
2 CONC , Ont. He had died in 1883 and was the first person buried in a large plot bought by Madeline
2 CONC 's mother Kezia Elizabeth Francis in Fairview Cemetery, Niagara Falls. In fact, he was one o
2 CONC f the first people buried in Fairview cemetery, the very first being buried there in Aug, 188

2 CONT After marrying in Detroit, William and Madelaine went west eventually settling in San Jose, C
2 CONC alifornia where their first child, James, was born 3 Jan 1895.

2 CONT This move meant that William's nephew (William Calvert McDonald) became the sole supporter o
2 CONC f his mother Margaret, sister Mary and aunt Anna. He was just 14 years old and had to quit sc
2 CONC hool to go to work.

2 CONT In California, William & Madeline Calvert had three chidren, (James, Eva and Madeline) the la
2 CONC test in 1901.

2 CONT They returned to Niagara Falls, Ont. in 1906/7 after the great earthquake but apparently sepa
2 CONC rated. In 1908 William is shown as a boarder in the Niagara Falls, Ont. City Directory in hi
2 CONC s nephew William MacDonald's household. The whereabouts of Madeline and the children are unkn
2 CONC own. This arrangement continued until 1912 when William, Madeline & family re-united and sett
2 CONC led in to  84 Huron St., Niagara Falls, Ont. The 1914 City Directory shows William Calvert li
2 CONC ving with "Mrs. Madelaine Calvert".

2 CONT In 1915, he was back living at 88 St. Clair Ave. with his nephew William Calvert MacDonald an
2 CONC d family while Madelaine Calvert was still living at 84 Huron St. The same situation appeare
2 CONC d in the 1916 City Directory. Apparently, William & Madeline had separated again in 1914/5.
2 CONT 
2 CONT In the 1919 Directory, Madelaine was no longer at 84 Huron and had disappeared from Niagara F
2 CONC alls. She returned to the U.S.A. with their 3 children. Wm. Calvert continued to live with hi
2 CONC s nephew at 88 St. Clair Ave. through 1925. He is not in the 1926 Directory but he is in th
2 CONC e 1927 and 1928 Directories at 990 St. Clair Ave. (when street numbers were changed in 1925/6
2 CONC , 88 St. Clair became 990 St. Clair. In the 1950's that property was renumbered 4990 St. Clai
2 CONC r Ave.).
2 CONT 
2 CONT At the end of August 1928, after a nine month illness, William was placed in the Welland Indu
2 CONC strial Home. This was the only place for indigents to live in the county of Welland when the
2 CONC y were no longer able to live on their own or live in the care of a family member. On the 29t
2 CONC h of November he died of kidney failure. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT Much of the information on his death record is inaccurate meaning there was no family membe
2 CONC r present at his death to provide the correct information.
2 CONT 
2 CONT William was buried on 30 Nov. 1928 next to his parents' graves in the cemetery of St. John th
2 CONC e Evangelist Anglican Church in Stamford, Ont. There is no marker on his grave.

2 CONT Madelaine Calvert, who died in Lewiston, N.Y. in 1964 at age 92, is buried in Fairview Cemete
2 CONC ry, Niagara Falls . Her stone is inscribed with "Madelaine Calvert wife of Wm. F. Calvert".

2 CONT There are 9 souls buried in the Francis' family plot (Sec. A Lot 22 & 23) in Farview Cemetery
2 CONC , Niagara Falls. There is a 10th grave in the plot that contains an unknown person. The small
2 CONC , old, almost totally buried stone on that unknown grave has the barely discernable letters "
2 CONC SSEL" on its top surface. There is still one unused space in the Francis family plot.

2 CONT Looking at that information not only makes me a bit sad, it also partly explains things tha
2 CONC t happened in 1930. 
2 CONT My mother had (has) always had a bit of resentment toward the Calverts etc. because when he
2 CONC r mother died, 3 weeks to the day after she was born, Madeline and Harold offered to adopt he
2 CONC r older brother but did not want her. 
2 CONT Now, we really can't judge, 75 years later, what the motivation for that was, but, it is clea
2 CONC r that they themselves were only newlyweds and not only did they they have to deal with the s
2 CONC udden death of Eva but with the prospect of two children without a mother and a father that a
2 CONC ppears to me to not have been able to handle much. Perhaps they just knew their limitations a
2 CONC nd felt they could not deal with a newborn. Who knows? It also was never mentioned to me "if
2 CONC " James and Mabel ever offered to take the two newly orphaned children. Considering they als
2 CONC o were childless, it makes one wonder exactly the mind set, doesn't it? Quite a mystery, delv
2 CONC ing back into the family archives. 
2 CONT As it turned out my mother and her brother were raised by my mother's paternal grandparents
2 CONC , who took them both in, at an age where they I'm sure were not planning on raising two babie
2 CONC s. I believe my mother must have had quite a sad and insecure youth, as her brother was take
